It’s all over the place. In blogs (great read btw) and in photo mags – the 50mm prime lens is the talk of the town. It’s almost annoying really. I mean, if the masses start taking these amazingly sharp and bokeh filled pictures where are we going to go?

All kidding aside, I’m glad it’s getting the credit it deserves: this is probably the best bang for the buck lens you can buy and one of my favorites. Fast, sharp, discrete and cheap. Nothing wrong with cheap these days.

Of course it’s no longer the “normal” focal length – unless you’re wielding a full frame sensor – but then it now has the advantage of doubling as a great portrait lens.

So as a tribute here are some shots I took this weekend at a birthday party: all 50mm, all the time. In this case it was the venerable Nikon 50mm 1.8. I was also testing my new SB-900 flash in a live, on-camera indoor setting (I’d only mostly used it in the studio until now). The walls and ceilings were all white which made for great bouncing.
